Lampard set to extend City stay

Cape Town - Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, who was loaned to Manchester City from MLS side New York City, is expected to extend his stay at the Etihad until February next year.

According to Sky Sports, City manager Manuel Pellegrini is looking for a backup option for Ivory Coast captain Yaya Toure, who is likely to be on international duty at the African Cup of Nations until early February next year, and is interested in keeping Lampard as a replacement.

An extension to his contract would see Lampard available once again to face his former team Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the 31st of January.

Lampard, who scored the equaliser for City against the Blues on Sunday, is expected to start pre-season training with New York City early next year, but could stay in England a while longer if Pellegrini is to make use of his services.
