Newcastle target denies going AWOL

Cape Town - Newcastle target and Lyon midfield play-maker Clement Grenier has rubbished reports which hinted that he missed training to force through a transfer.

The Guardian report that Grenier has rejected the speculation that he was trying to pressure Lyon into agreeing to sell him to Newcastle.

Grenier insists that he is happy to remain in France with Lyon.

The French international explained his absence by saying that he suffered an injury and is working his way back to full fitness.

Grenier took to his personal website to settle the issue.

“I have read a lot of things about myself recently.

"Just to be clear, Lyon’s medical and technical staff have set me a specific programme so I can be back at 100 per cent.

"There were talks and I had to consider a lot of things. Now my wish is to stay at Lyon and go on improving."

"That includes a period spent training indoors. That is why I have not been present at some of the training sessions.

“I have no problem with the club and have never missed a training session intentionally.

“There is no controversy and my intention is to be back on the pitch and competing as soon as possible.”

Lyon open their Ligue 1 campaign on August 10 against Rennes.
