Johannesburg - He's gone from being a multi- millionaire owning petrol stations, premium brand boutiques and nightclubs, not to mention a fleet of luxury cars and a multi-million rand mansion in Weskoppies in Klerksdorp, North West, to being penniless, car-less and homeless reports The Sunday World.
This is the sad story of soccer legend Phil “Chippa” Masinga, the former Bafana Bafana goalpoacher whose historic goal took South Africa to its first World Cup in 1998.
Masinga, the 2010 Soccer World Cup ambassador, is allegedly broke after living the high life – so broke that he has moved into the back room of his late mother’s house in Khuma township, Klerksdorp.
Masinga admits this but says there is nothing wrong with that.
“So what if I have problems in my life? Who doesn’t have them?” he asks.’’ “Tell me, what’s wrong with living in a township? Irvin Khoza is a millionaire and he stays in the township.
“Let me put it to you, if there are problems in my life I don’t need and I don’t want pity like Baby Jake Matlala,” he said and hung up.
About a week ago the community of Khuma were spoilt for choice as the legend threw a garage sale, selling goods he no longer needs now that his living space has shrunk.
A source who attended the garage sale, says the people there could not believe their eyes when they saw the soccer legend selling his prized possessions.
“Besides the big items, even irons, toasters and kettles were on sale. Does this mean he is so desperate for cash?”, asks our source.
“There were a lot of ‘Wuye?’ (It’s him) and ‘Asiwuye’ (It’s not him) whispers.
“He looked pale and it was evident that he no longer has money. The people who live in the same street are shocked that the ex star player has come to live with them,” says the source.
“In his heyday he would not even give us a second glance, but these days he greets us with all the respect in the world, saying ‘Dumelang ba golo (Greetings, my elders)’, says the source.
It is alleged Masinga was a big spender when he was in the limelight. Some township residents remember him for throwing lavish parties and going out with girls from Milner High School.
