Pirates braced for Ajax test

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates and Ajax CT will renew their cup rivalry when the team meet for their Telkom Knockout quarter-final at Orlando Stadium.

Orlando Pirates advanced to the last eight of the Telkom Knockout with a 2-1 home win over Polokwane City courtesy of goals from Issa Sarr and Thabo "Section" Qalinge.

The Soweto giants have played 25 Telkom Knockout matches since the tournament’s inception in 2006, recording 18 wins, three draws and four losses. They have not won any of the three penalty shootouts they have been involved in.

The Buccaneers best showing in the Telkom Knockout era arrived in the 2011/12 season when they won the tournament, defeating Bidvest Wits 3-1 in the final.

In League Cup history, Pirates have won the tournament once (2012) and been runners-up seven times (1987, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2008, 2010 & 2013).

Ajax Cape Town advanced to the last eight of the Telkom Knockout with a 3-0 home win over Black Aces. Thabiso Nkoana netted a brace, while Abbubaker Mobara also got his name on the score sheet.

The Cape Town side has played 18 Telkom Knockout matches since the tournament’s inception in 2006, recording eight wins, four draws and six defeats. They have won three of the four penalty shootouts they have been involved in.

The Urban Warriors’ best showing in the Telkom Knockout era arrived in 2008 when they won the competition, defeating Orlando Pirates in the final.

In League Cup history, Ajax have won the tournament twice (2000 & 2008) and appeared in the final a further two times (2006 & 2009/10).

In head-to-head stats, Pirates and Ajax have met in seven cup matches since 1999/2000. The Cape side has tended to get the better of their Soweto rivals, recording four victories and suffering just two defeats.

Ajax are in fact unbeaten in the Telkom Knockout and it's League Cup predecessor against Orlando Pirates, with three wins and one draw from four matches. The most recent example was a 2-1 win in the final of the 2008 Telkom Knockout in which Mabhuti Khenyeza netted a brace.

The teams met most recently in the quarter-finals of the 2009 MTN8 and the Urban Warriors emerged 2-1 winners.

Overall, the teams have met in 37 matches across all competitions since 1999/2000. The Buccaneers have recorded 18 wins compared to 10 for Ajax, while nine matches have been drawn.

Pirates have won 11 of their 16 home matches against Ajax down the years with just three defeats along the way.

The Soweto side is unbeaten in their last six matches against Ajax, including a 2-1 home win and goalless away draw in the league last season.

Kick-off is at 20:15 on Saturday, October 25.
