Dikwena have TKO advantage

Cape Town -Platinum Stars face Kaizer Chiefs for the fourth time this season when they clash in the quarter-final of the Telkom Knockout.

The Glamour Boys earned their place in the last eight of the Telkom Knockout with a 1-0 home win over Maritzburg United in the last 16 with striker Bernard Parker scoring the decisive goal.

The Soweto giants have played 21 Telkom Knockout matches since the tournament’s inception in 2006, recording 11 wins, five draws and five defeats. They have won all five of the penalty shootouts they have been involved in.

The Amakhosi have lifted the trophy three times in the Telkom Knockout era, winning the competition in 2007/08, 2009/10 and 2010/11.

In League Cup history, Kaizer Chiefs are comfortably the most successful side, boasting 13 titles (1983, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009/10 & 2010/11) and further three runners-up finishes (1985, 1992 & 2002).

Platinum Stars, the defending champions of this tournament, began their Telkom Knockout defense against Chippa United and snuck into the last eight courtesy of a late Chilli Boys own goal.

The Rustenburg-based side has played 16 Telkom Knockout matches since the tournament’s inception in 2006, recording nine wins, three draws and four defeats. They have won one of the three penalty shootouts they have been involved in.

Dikwena’s have twice won the Telkom Knockout with their previous win coming back in 2006.

In League Cup history, Platinum Stars also reached the final in 2003 but were beaten 2-0 by Kaizer Chiefs (although at that stage they were still known as the Silver Stars).

In head-to-head stats, Chiefs and Stars have met in six previous cup encounters since the latter’s promotion to the top flight in 2003.

All but two of these clashes have been in the League Cup (now Telkom Knockout).

Each side has three wins to their name, all of Dikwena’s cup victories have been in the Telkom Knockout, including a 1-0 win in last year’s semifinal.

However, the teams’ most recent cup clashes were in the semifinals of this season’s MTN8: the Amakhosi won 2-0 away and 3-0 at home for a comprehensive 5-0 aggregate victory.

Overall, the teams have met in 29 matches across all competitions since 2003/04. Chiefs have claimed 13 victories compared to seven for Dikwena, while nine matches have been drawn.

The Amakhosi have won five of their 13 home matches against Sunday's opponents, suffering just three defeats in the process.

Aside from this season's MTN8 meetings, Kaizer Chiefs have also beaten Stars in the league this season, winning 2-0 in Rustenburg in late August.
