Johannesburg - Former Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez is training with Bidvest Wits following his two-week trial period at Mpumalanga Black Aces.
The veteran shot-stopper, along with Sibusiso Zuma, was released by Matsatsantsa when his contract elapsed at the end of last season.
Both players are still without a club and the Springs-born goal-minder will be looking to secure a contract with the Clever Boys.
In an exclusive interview with Sport24 on Monday, Fernandez confirmed that his move to Amazayoni did not prevail due to the fact that they have adequate depth within their goalkeeping department.
He also hinted that it will be up to the Clever Boys' head coach, Gavin Hunt, and the club CEO, Jose Ferreira, to decide if he is good enough to play for Wits in the upcoming season.
“Yes, I’m still club-less at the moment,” said Fernandez.
“I trained with Mpumalanga Black Aces for two weeks. But things couldn’t work out for me there. They decided to stick with Energy (Murambadoro) and Calvin (Marlin). For now I am training with Bidvest Wits.
“I am really working hard at training with their goalkeeper coach Andre Arendse and the rest of the ‘keepers. The coach (Hunt) will decide if I am fit enough to play for them. Or even their CEO Jose Ferreira will make a decision regarding that. But personally, I still feel fit and strong enough to continue playing. My body is in perfect shape and hopefully things will go well. I don’t know what will happen if I don’t make it here, but we will see.”
Should the 36-year-old industrious goalkeeper fail to find a club in the coming season, it would signal end of his stellar career.
Fernandez broke into professional football back in 1996 when he spent five seasons with Wits before joining Amakhosi in July 2001.
