Komphela ready for his first trophy

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela is confident that his first trophy in his over a decade coaching career will come in his tenure with the Soweto giants.

Komphela has never won a single trophy since he started coaching in 2002, coming close with Manning Rangers in the Absa Cup final in 2004.

He has a good chance to change that with Chiefs who are the reigning MTN8 and Absa Premiership champions. Komphela is looking to build on the success achieved by Stuart Baxter, whom he replaced.

Komphela's search for his first title with Amakhosi starts on Wednesday night at FNB Stadium when he faces his former employers Maritzburg United in their opening round of the tournament.

"Success sometimes will always be referred to a particular individual when there are whole lot of organs and activities that would lead you to such success," Komphela said.

"So at Chiefs, we strongly believe that the structure is there to generate success. Regarding pressure, even (Jose) Mourinho, who has so many championships in different countries, when he went to Italy he didn't have a Scudetto.

"He had to start from one and all of us start counting from one. You don't start counting from four.

"If at the end of the day after three years at Kaizer Chiefs and we are looking at what this team has achieved when Steve had been given the opportunity to be a coach, we will say the first trophy was... We wouldn't say trophy number four was... There is always the beginning.

"Any start that comes start with zero. We are on zero, one will come followed by the rest of the other numbers."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
