Sundowns add to Ajax's woes

Johannesburg - Goals from Alje Schut and Teko Modise helped Mamelodi Sundowns to a 2-1 win over Ajax Cape Town in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Tashriq Morris had equalised for the Urban Warriors in the second-half, but Modise popped up with six minutes remaining to secure all three points for the hosts.

The win moves ‘Downs back into second spot in the league standings, 15 points behind league leaders Kaizer Chiefs, while the Urban Warriors’ failure to win for the sixth game in succession sees them fall 22 points adrift of the Amakhosi.

Brandon Petersen was forced into an early save, with the Ajax gloves-man doing well to keep out Anthony Laffor’s powerful effort from range in the seventh minute.

Both teams were dealt a massive blow in the 16th minute as both Petersen and Laffor were forced off following a nasty collision in the Urban Warriors penalty box.

The hosts opened their account on the evening in the 25th minute. Teko Modise’s floating free-kick was brilliantly met by Schut, who headed past substitute keeper Anssi Jaakkola.

Sundowns continued to boss the game, with Cuthbert Malajila and Lindokuhle Mbatha guilty of squandering golden opportunities to double the champions’ lead before the break.

Having failed to register a single shot on target in the first-half, Ajax looked a different unit after the break and levelled matters through Morris in the 54th minute.

Mweene’s attempted clearance fell at Morris feet, the Urban Warriors midfielder making no mistake to net his fourth goal of the campaign.

Both teams pressed forward in search of the winner in what a frantic finish to the encounter with Modise ultimately claiming the spoils for Pitso Mosimane’s men in the 84th minute.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder nodding Kuda Mahachi’s cross past Jaakkola from close range, 2-1.
