Sarr basks in Carling Cup win

Johannesburg - Following his debut in the Carling Black Label Cup win over Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, Orlando Pirates midfielder Issa Sarr said he was delighted to be on the winning side in his first game in the famous black and white colours of the Soweto giants.

As it happened: Kaizer Chiefs v Orlando Pirates

Pirates defeated Chiefs 6-5 on penalties after a goalless stalemate at the FNB Stadium.

The Senegalese international came on as a second half substitute to replace Tlou Segolela before winning the hearts of the Buccaneers' faithful with his tremendous performance.

The 27-year-old made a telling contribution to the game when he stepped up to take the last penalty - before the shootout headed into sudden death - which he converted comfortably, sending Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune the wrong way.

After the match, the former Platinum Stars man shared his delight in featuring in the biggest fixture in the history of the South African club football.

“It’s still the beginning of the season,” Said Sarr.

“It was my first time playing in the derby and am really excited about taking part.

“I used to hear people talking about the derby and I have never experienced the feeling of playing in the derby until today (Saturday).

“I took courage when I stepped up to take the fifth penalty, knowing that if I missed we'd lose the match.

“I’m happy that I managed to score and we won.

“It’s a nice feeling to win something with your new team.”

Sarr joined the Buccaneers from Dikwena last month.

He played an instrumental role in helping the North West Tycoons to their Cup double last season.

Stars defeated his current team, Pirates, to claim the MTN8 title and the Telkom Knockout Cup at the early stages of the 2013/14 campaign.

Pirates will kick off their new season when they meet SuperSport United in the MTN8 quarter-finals at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 20:15.
