SAFA to release findings

Johannesburg - The South African Football Association (SAFA) will release findings of the Norman Arendse Commission into allegations levelled against Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund and SAFA vice-president Mwelo Nonkonyana on Thursday.

SAFA’s national executive committee (NEC) met earlier this week to deliberate on the findings by the task committee, chaired by advocate Norman Arendse.

Igesund was under investigation into allegations that he tried to influence players to ask for more bonuses during the African Nations Championship tournament hosted by South Africa in January.

The Bafana coach vehemently denied the claims from the outset and last week said he was confident of being cleared of any wrongdoing.

Igesund will lead Bafana against Australia and New Zealand next month in two international friendlies, but it is unlikely his contract, which expires in August, will be renewed.

Meanwhile, Nonkonyana appeared before a SAFA disciplinary committee hearing after publicly telling Igesund to win the tournament or relinquish his job, prior to the start of the tournament.

Bafana failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship following a heavy 3-1 defeat to Nigeria in their final group A clash at Cape Town Stadium in January.
