Cuevas too good for Melzer

Kuala Lumpur - Fifth-seeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay has opened the Malaysian Open with a 6-4, 7-6 (1) victory over Jurgen Melzer of Austria on Monday.

The 28-year-old Cuevas, who won two titles in July, will next meet Ivan Dodig of Croatia, who had a 7-6 (6), 6-1 win over Hiroki Moriya of Japan.

Filip Krajinovic of Serbia beat Taro Daniel of Japan 6-2, 6-4 in a battle between two wild-card recipients.

Kei Nishikori, the runner-up at the U.S. Open, is the No. 1-seeded player at the tournament.
