6 Must-experience sport interests in South Africa

In order to classify yourself as a true South African sports fan, you need to have ticked off at least three of the iconic sports interests in the country.

Each offer their own, unique sporting experience… from a trip down memory lane at the Springbok Experience Museum to a spirited vuvuzela blow-off at the Soweto Stadium,  this is the religion that is Sport in South Africa.

1. The Springbok Experience Rugby Museum, Cape Town

Every rugby – and sport – enthusiast should know the rich and optimistic road rugby has tread over the past year. Even though it’s a mere sport, South Africa’s road to victory – in more than one way – is entwined with that of rugby, and every South African needs to experience that in this state of the art museum and rugby ‘play field’.

2. Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg

History was made here. Friendships have been formed here. Rivalries have peaked here. Tears have flooded, vocal cords have shattered and dreams have been born here. If Ellis Park’s concrete walls could talk, South Africans would bow down.

3. FNB Soccer Stadium, Soweto

Here is the place to blow your vuvuzela until the last breath has left your lungs (and then… inhale!). You haven’t experience SA “gees” until you’ve felt a rain of vuvuzela juice (yes, it is spit), on your head while watching your favourite team score… Laduma!

4. The Tubes, Jeffrey’s Bay

Not all of us can be rugby, soccer of cricket enthusiasts… but fear not. South Africa also hosts some of the world’s best waves in the beloved JBay.

5. Newlands Sports Stadium, Cape Town

… Yet for those who enjoy everything – from cricket to soccer to rugby – the Newlands Rugby fields and surrounding sport area will never cease to impress and fuel the religious love South Africans have for sport.

6. Moses Mabhiba Stadium, Durban

This unique South African stadium was built with a walk way right over it. If you're not a sports enthusiast per se, at least do yourself a favour and go check out the spectacular views of Durbs from up there.
