Cape Town - After surviving a brutal attack in 2012, a female rhino at Kariega Game Reserve called Thandi made headline news around the world, becoming a symbol of hope against the terrible scourge of poaching.
Fast forward almost three years and Thandi was in the news once more. But this time for a much more joyful reason: the birth of her calf!
Named Thembi, which means 'hope' in isiXhosa, the miracle calf has joined her mother in becoming a tangible reminder that the battle against poaching is not lost.
Inspired by Thandi's story, a UK charity called Helping Rhinos, which was started by a former volunteer at Kariega, has managed to raise over R1.2m for rhino conservation and awareness.
Founder Simon Jones said in a comment posted on Facebook, "It is fair to say that the emotional connection with Thandi and Kariega, having spent 6 weeks there as a volunteer, and the images of her laying in pools of blood as Dr Fowlds worked to try and save her, was the final push for me to do something that could make a tangible difference."
Along with Kariega management and Dr William Fowlds of Rhino Lifeline, Jones has been monitoring Thandi and Thembi's movements closely and recently released a video telling their story.
Apart from sharing their miraculous story, the video also showcases some extremely cute footage of mom and daughter that will just melt your heart.
