Cape Town – A ranger from Madikwe Game Reserve in North West captured an incredibly rare, yet tragic moment on camera when a rhino lifted a baby zebra out of mud it had gotten stuck in and killed it in the process.
Roel van Muiden posted the image onto his photography Facebook page, describing the sighting as “unusual, sad, yet epic.”

He went on to explain that the tiny zebra had gotten stuck in the mud at one of the dams and was unable to get out.
“This rhino found the baby zebra and out of curiosity picked it up out of the mud. However, this caused the horn to go into the body and gore the poor zebra,” he wrote.
Netwerk24 reports that Van Muiden had been on a game drive with two South African guests when they spotted a herd of rhino at the watering hole. Little did they know that it would turn into the sighting of a lifetime!
It is not clear what the rhinos intentions were – according to Van Muiden it’s highly unlikely that the pachyderm was trying to save the foal.
Perhaps it was just curious.
