Lion Park, Lanseria


Dubbed Gauteng's number 1 attraction, the Lion Park is real treat for kids of all ages. This wildlife conservation enclosure, situated near Lanseria Airport and Fourways, is an easy day-trip's drive from either Johannesburg or Pretoria.

You can opt for a self-drive through the 2 km² park or take a guided tour which allows you to get extremely close to white lion, wild dog, hyena and a number of African wildlife species such as zebra, giraffe, gemsbuck, springbuck and blesbuck. They also offer special tours like an amazing cheetah walk and the exclusive mesmerising lion tour guided by world renowned animal behaviourist, Alex Larenty.

Acrobranch, Melrose

At Acrobranch your kids will get the chance to monkey around just like they always wish they can – in treetops! Now, before you freak out and go looking for something less dangerous, we can assure you that it’s all completely safe and supervised. There are four different obstacle courses to choose from, ranging from ‘Playing Cubs,’ which is specially designed for little ones, to ‘Hunting Lions,’ which boasts 47 obstacles and platforms up to 9 metres high.

Each of the courses have a variety of foresty obstacles, including a Tarzan swing, ziplines, monkey bridges and swaying logs.

Cost: Depending on which course you opt for, prices range between R100 and R200.

Quad Biking, Pelinduna Adventures, Hartbeespoort

Get in touch with your wild sides at Pelinduna Adventures by hopping on a quad bike and rushing through the Hartbeespoort bushveld. The park offers a variety of terrain, including bush, sand, rocks and water. You don’t need any experience to hit the trails, so it’s perfect for you and your adventurous teens!

Laser Quest, Brightwater Commons

Yup, believe it or not, laser quest is still a thing! Check out Laser Battle Zone at Brightwater Commons for some adrenaline-pumping fun, suitable for anyone of 6 years or older. The room is laid out to look like a derelict city, with plenty of spots to hide out and stalk your ‘enemies’ in the dark.  

Just note that booking is essential if you’re looking to go over a weekend!

Cost: R50 per person for a 15-minute game or R120 per person for multi-play (3x15mins).

Indoor go-karting, Sunninghill Village Shopping Centre

Indulge any racing driver fantasies by treating your family to a Monaco-style go-karting experience. Just be sure to keep all long hair tightly tied up (preferably in a bun), wear closed shoes and no loose-fitting or flowing clothing.

Cost: Between R130 and R370 per person, depending how long you go for.

The quintessential holiday treat, take your kids to Jozi’s gold rush themed amusement park and they will probably love you forever. The park has a huge variety of rides, of which the Anaconda is probably the flagship attraction – it’s one of only two inverted roller coasters in the world, as well as the fastest and tallest in Africa. There is also the Giant Wheel, the Tower of Terror, UFO, Miner’s Revenge and the chilled out Dream Boat.
