Snow Report South Africa sounded the snow alert on Monday 13 April, warning of snow fall in the highest parts of the country, extending it to many more of SA's mountain passes on Thursday.

Passes affected by snow since then included Wapadsberg Pass near Graaff Reinet, small parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal's Drakenberg peaks, as well as the high mountains of the Western Cape.

Afriski Mountain Resort in Lesotho was the hardest hit by the snowfall.

Although many families had to endure the cold in the absence of electricity due to Eskom's harsh load-shedding implementation over the weekend, travellers embraced the first, unexpected snow fall.

Apart from the cold front last week, the Eastern Cape especially is gearing up for a longer than usual winter this year as weather forecasts indicate a bitterly cold, dry winter, with plenty of heavy frost and sub-zero temperatures can be expected.

Here are some of the best travellers' pics from the weekend's snow, as posted to Snow Report SA's Facebook page
