Cape Town - This remarkable image taken by Estiaan Houy at the Jock Safari Lodge in the Kruger National Park is a real life depiction of the Biblical metaphor, 'the lion will lay down with the lamb'.
Louis Strauss, the General Manager of Jock Safari Lodge said that a ranger of the lodge, Lazarus Mkhonto, came across this "unusual sighting of a young leopard that seemed confused about what to do with this impala lamb". Strauss said the leopard and the lamb sat & played together for almost an hour, showing affection to each other, then they walked away into the thickets like a mother would with her young...".
There are an abundance of young impala in the Kruger National Park this time of year, and the cruel reality may be that the leopard didn't see the young lamb as a meal because he was already stuffed! That thought makes us dread the moment the leopard becomes peckish again!
Although no-one yet knows what happened to the impala calf after they disappeared from sight, we sure are hoping that this story has a happy ending.
