Cape Town - Earlier this week news broke that the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) was looking for four young and able people to fill various roles at the Port Lockroy base on Goudier Island off the Antarctic Peninsula.
According to a job advertisement sent out by UKAHT they were looking for candidates who would be willing to spend the five-month Austral summer season performing a number of different duties at the base, including sorting post, keeping an eye on the resident penguin colony, running the shop and helping to maintain the museum at the British historical base of Port Lockroy.
UKAHT described living conditions as being comfortable, they highlight the fact that there is no mains power, heat or water (we're not too sure what's comfortable about that!).
Now, while this might sound like a nightmare to many of us, they actually received such an influx of applications that the UKAHT site broke for a little while.
BBC reports that by Tuesday evening more than 1 000 people had applied for the job and that many more were expected to come in before the cut-off date on Friday, 27 February. Successful applicants can expect a pay check of £1 100 (R19 721 at R17.93/pound) per month.
The island has become quite a popular tourist destination over the past few years, drawing close on 18 000 'ship-borne' visitors every year between November and March.
Part of the charm of visiting the island, is getting to send a letter or two from the most southerly post office on the planet. According to the UKAHT job spec, around 70 000 mail items make their way through the post office every year.
