Bolt comes loose on plane, smashes into window mid-flight

Cape Town – So, you’re just sitting there in your airplane seat when suddenly you hear a popping noise and turn around to find a piece of metal wedged into the window next to you.

Scary thought, huh?

Well, this is exactly what happened to a passenger on board an Air Canada Express flight from Penticton to Vancouver recently, who shared the traumatic incident on Reddit.

Huffington Post reports that Matt Langlois posted two photographs on the social media site, showing a bolt lodged into the aircraft’s window.

They were accompanied by the description: “So about halfway through my flight I heard a loud POP, looked out my window at a bolt that flew off the prop and broke through the outer pane."

He continued to explain how the passengers around him also heard the noise and started to panic, which inspired him to get up and report it to the flight attendant, who immediately alerted the captain.

The pilot said it would be fine until landing, as the cabin was pressurised, but did admit that he had never experienced a similar incident in his 25 years of flying.

Air Canada confirmed the incident, saying that a one-inch bolt came loose on their Dash 8 plane, striking the acrylic window and making a small hole.

Earlier this month the propeller broke off another Air Canada Express plane and crashed through one of the aircraft’s windows, injuring one of the passengers on board. The flight had to make an emergency landing.
