Cape Town - Cape Town’s only dedicated comedy club, situated at the Pumphouse at the V&A Waterfront, has changed its name from Jou Ma Se Comedy Club to The Cape Town Comedy Club.
Founder and co-owner, comedian Kurt Schoonraad said the change is "quintessentially a coming of age story”.
The management team decided to rename the club to “Cape Town Comedy Club” because, Schoonraad explains, "it seemed like a natural thing to do".
He says, "It feels like the brand is all grown up now and the new name reflects that".
Schoonraad hopes the change would make "comedy available to a much wider audience,” he said in a statement on their website.
He assures patrons that they can expect the same quality of side-splitting comedy they have always enjoyed at the Club, as the change of name would not affect the comedy brand in any other way.
The change has was accepted overwhelmingly positive by the Club's followers and supporters on social media.
Facebook follower Mark Heldsinger commented, "Good idea... " Jou Ma Se" did not work". Another follower, Ingrid Kemp Carelse says, "Good idea.....you've come of age".
The brand was first created in 2005 and part of the Cape Town Festival, as a tongue in cheek pop up Comedy Club. In 2007, the club moved to the Albert Hall in Woodstock, where Kurt’s idea to provide a regular, reputable stand-up club was welcomed with open arms in Cape Town.
Jou Ma Se Comedy Club became known as the mother of all Cape Town comedy clubs and home to some of the country’s greatest talent. In November 2013 the brand finally found a permanent home at the beautiful historic Pumphouse in the heart of the V&A Waterfront.
The change was implemented on 25 February 2015.
