Mashable reports that the blobby-looking specimen that washed up in Albay was nicknamed Toothless for its resemblance to the cute animated character in How To Train Your Dragon.
News of the unusual discovery was spread after Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines and Nonus Evolvus, head of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Regional Emergency Stranding Response Team, shared photographs and videos of the creature on social media.
Megamouth sharks were first discovered in 1976, when a US Navy Vessel caught one in its anchor and in 1990 a live specimen was caught and tagged off Dana Point in California. Data gathered from the tagged shark revealed that it generally dwells at depths of up to 160m.
While they are known as sharks, Megamouths don't actually have sharp teeth like many others in the species, but instead filters its food, usually made up of krill and other small fish, Nature World News reports.
