Cape Town - Shark Spotters have confirmed that Fish Hoek beach has been reopened after Monday's shark sighting turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.
Shark Spotters said on its Facebook Page, "We are able to confirm that the current sighting (27 Jan) in Fish Hoek is not a shark, but a small, rarely-sighted whale species. Fish Hoek beach is therefore open at this time."
The whale is being closely monitored to see if it needs assistance and its species has yet to be confirmed.
The popular swimming spot was closed on Monday after the initial sighting, with Shark Spotters posting the following image.
