Standing Strong: Wiki loves SA monuments

Cape Town - The winners in the Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 competition have been announced.

The photo competition for monuments and heritage sites in South Africa, saw more than 4013 photograph submitted. While this was a slight decrease from last year's 6 432 submissions, they were pleased with the improved quality of this year's photos.

Leanri van Heerden clinched first prize with her striking image of the Women’s Memorial in Bloemfontein, winning a R10 000 voucher from Orms.

The competition, which started in 2012, invited people from all over the world to submit photographs of “new and fascinating” views of monuments.

"We would like to thank each of the 94 participants that submitted photographs in 2014."

IOL reports the ambiguous way in which the Copyright Act of 1978 was written means no images of recently built monuments are allowed to be submitted to wikipedia or used in the competition. The organisers are looking to get the act amended

If you would like to participate in next year's competition then start taking photographs now to submit in Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 in September 2015 - see full details here
