Get your braai off at the Wavescape fish fry

The Wavescape Fish Fry presented by WWF SASSI (South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) marks the first official event in the 11th edition of the highly anticipated Wavescape Festival 2014 presented by Pick ‘n Pay.

On Saturday 29 November from 15h00 – late, the Wavescape Fish Fry, will bring surfing communities from across the Cape Peninsula together at the Blue Bird Garage Market in the little village of Muizenberg along the False Bay coast line, recognised as being the spiritual and historical home of surfing in South Africa.

This event opens a window into the underground surf culture offering the public a chance to interact with surfboard shapers, artists, environmentalists and other surfers as well as buy a surfboard, or trade in and swop their old boards (R100 payable at the door).

In conjunction with WWF SASSI, organisers hope to educate all ocean users and consumers about cooking with sustainable fish by inviting them to support their favourite Ultimate Braai Master All Stars teams as they participate in a live ‘braai-off’ during the afternoon’s festivities. Each team will cook with WFF SASSI approved Green-list fish while bush cook guru and celebrity chef Justin Bonello will host the fish braai challenge.

The six Ultimate Braai Master teams will consist of contestants from Seasons 2 and 3 (Smoke, Sweat and Tears, Coal Play, Santa Annas, Weskus Braaiers, Tikka Boys and Team Tenancity). Executive chef Bertus Basson of Overture will heading a judging panel featuring food bloggers and foodies, and top South African cookbooks will be raffled.

Save our Seas Foundation will run fun edutainment events for the kids to keep them busy while adults get to sample some of Cape Town’s finest craft beer compliments of Jack Black Beer and delicious food from local vendors, as well as admire surf artists and craftsmen demonstrating their work. As the sun sets behind the mountain, event goers can boogie the night away to the sounds of 5fm’s DJ Cath Grenfell spinning the decks.

Entrance is R30 at the door (children under 16 are free). Proceeds from the surfboard and tickets sales go to the Waves for Change surfing programme

Play your part and choose fish on the SASSI Green-list. Not sure what to choose? Send the name of the fish to the SASSI FishMS number 0794998795 or download the SASSI App

The Wavescape Festival is supported by Pick ‘n Pay, WWF-SASSI, Red Bull, Banana Peel, Jack Black Beer, and Save our Seas Foundation. All funds raised will go to the Festival’s beneficiaries NSRI, Shark Spotters and the Isiqalo Foundation.
