Jozi in March
It’s March already! And after the quick and easy February, March can get a little long and tedious. But as it turns out, people really like to put on festivals in March. Who knew? Here are a few big events with unique appeal to help you swiftly get over the seemingly long month:
Go to the orchestra. As someone who has only recently moved to this magnificent city, I didn’t know what to say when a fancy Dutch doctor bemoaned the lack of an orchestra in Jozi. It didn’t sound right. So I got to work (Googled) and of course we have an orchestra, it was just off season, fancy Dutch doctor! The first season of 2015 started on February 25th at Wits University’s Linder Auditorium and runs all the way to March 19th. Pre-concert talks usually take place at 7:15pm and the show starts at 8pm. Costs range from R250 – R330 pp.

Go outdoor dancing. Maboneng Precinct now has its own concert series called Seven Sounds. It’s an outdoor music festival held at Maboneng’s Common Ground. It features a lot of sevens: Seven hours of great music from seven original artists on the seventh day of the month. This month’s seven artists are; Southern Wild, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Josie Field and Laurie Levine, Sutherland, Banda, Bye Beneco and BCUC. Look, even if some of these names mean nothing to you, GO! It’s good to try new things. And as far as music festivals go, this is one of the least taxing. Catch it on March 7th. Gates open at 10am. Only 700 tickets are available and they cost R195pp online and R250pp at the gate.

Taste all of the beer. We now fully live in a craft beer world, resistance is futile. And why would you? Craft beer has now fully entered the mainstream and there are some delicious beers out there. Some are a little more challenging and take a stronger or a more delicate palette to enjoy. But just like wine tasting, beer tasting is becoming an art form and the Sandton Craft Beer Fair brings you some of the best handcrafted beers and ciders the country has to offer. There will be live music entertainment and – it goes without saying – artisanal food vendors. Catch it at the Sandton Sports Club, just a few kilometers from the Gautrain station on March 7th from 10am. Tickets cost R100 (early bird) and R150pp.

Get famous. Or see work by famous – or soon to be famous – theatre makers. The Festival of Fame is an annual event held by The National School of the Arts. It is a five day festival where “truly famous, newly famous and about-to-be-famous” artists put on performances, workshops and exhibitions for the benefit of students and young artists who would like interact with professionals. This also means that the public gets to enjoy great work at a fraction of the regular costs. Shows and performances will be held at various NSA venues; the Downstairs Theatre, the Lab and the Main School Hall. Other venues include the Mandela, Space and Fringe theatres at Joburg Theatre. Catch it on March 9th – 15th. Tickets cost R60 – 100pp.
