Jozi in February


The beginning of every February brings with it lamentations on the commercialisation of love. And then as the fourteenth approaches we are all so worn down from the barrage of Valentine’s Day advertising that we go, “Oh, whatever. We’ll go with the flow. If not seriously then at least ironically.”  

It’s hard to ignore that February is the month of love. And yes, you shouldn’t wait for just one day in the year to celebrate your love for your sweetie but themes are fun. So here are some events that can also double up as a series of pre and post Valentine’s dates:

Celebrate the Year of the Goat 


Rewrite your already forgotten New Year’s resolutions and ring in the Chinese New Year on February 1st at the Brightwater Commons. It’s an event supported by the Chinese Embassy of South Africa. Put on your brightest red clothes – red is considered a lucky colour in Chinese culture – and be ready to feast on traditional Chinese foods, entertainment and culture. Get on the right page with your partner

 Imago educator and facilitator Paula Quinsee runs a workshop on romance and relationships at the Alchemy Esoteric Shoppe and Wellness Centre. Perhaps the romance in your relationship is waning. Or you would just like acquire more tools to deepen your intimacy with your partner. This workshop aims to shed light on those issues and show couples how to get the most of out of a romantic relationship. Catch it on February 4th at 6:30pm. Class it up



Start a lovely Saturday night date with the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble. They will play with acclaimed pianist Melvyn Tan at The Edge on February 7th. The night’s repertoire includes Rameau’s Pygmalion overture, Sarasate’s Navarra and Khatachurian’s Masquerade Waltz. If those are just random words to you, YouTube that stuff before you go, it’s really good. The night will be rounded off by some energetic Kwela music. Get hypnotised

 Well, you don’t have to but you can enjoy watching other people act out entertaining hypnotic suggestions from Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist. Andre prides himself on being very persuasive, so remember that when you volunteer. His show is also infused with great humour so there will be chaos on stage and lots of laughs. It runs Wednesday to Sunday throughout the month at Montecasino Theatre and Studio. Tickets cost R100pp. for more information visit www.montecasino.co.za.


Connect with all of your emotions

The writer of this piece is also a storyteller and comedian and his hilarious and poignant show When We Were Nearly Young has been Twitter recommended by acclaimed writer Lauren Beukes. Yvonne Chaka Chaka has even told a story or two at one of the events. It’s a fun hour of stories about doomed celebrity diets, dramatic first kisses, political intrigue and North Korean bomb threats. You will leave feeling tender and more connected to everyone around you. Go full sexy on Valentine’s Day
 

Top-Notch Burlesque Variety Revue brings its first 2015 Johannesburg show and it promises to be high on raunch with a little romance. Sometimes that’s exactly what is needed. There will be lots of champagne cocktails, glitter, and dessert and of course, showgirls and showboys. The show will feature performances from entertainers with names like; Ivana Backoff, Foxy Bonnet, Pocket Size Diva and Ally Oop. Catch it on February 14th at 8pm.
