Photos of Beyonce wearing blackface have hit the net, fuelling arguments about whether the photos are artistic or racist. Fresh off a controversy about whether the singer bleacher her skin, Beyonce posed for L'Officiel Paris wearing blackface in homage to Nigerian musician and humanitarian Fela Kuti, who she says inspired her music for her next album.
In an official statement, the magazine said: "Far from the glamorous Sasha Fierce, the beauty posed for the magazine with amazing fashion designers' clothes, but also in a dress created by her mother. [It is] A return to her African roots, as you can see on the picture, on which her face was voluntarily darkened."
The photoshoot was slammed by Jezebel writer, Dodai Stewart, who said blackface is still offensive regardless of the ethnicity of the person wearing the dark makeup. "When you paint your face darker in order to look more ‘African,’ aren’t you reducing an entire continent, full of different nations, tribes, cultures and histories, into one brown color?" she wrote.
