According to the Independent, Cherie Booth, the wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair announced at a literary festival that if men who perform with mediocrity can get jobs then equal opportunity should be given to women.
Cherie argued that average women suffer more than their less-than-average male counterparts.
Cherie proposes that the quota should be used as a step towards gender equality.
And Cherie reckons that waiting around for women empowerment to just happen miraculously would result in change occurring at a slower pace.
Therefore a quota system would make sure that this change takes place sooner rather than later.
One just needs to look at social media to see how patriarchy is still very real. The past few weeks have seen the emergence of disturbing views on social media which emphasised how male privilege is still prevalent.
A week ago the hashtags: #FemalePrivilege and #BringBackOurHoodies on Twitter all illustrated how there’s a long way to go before eradicating male privilege.
#FemalePrivilege blatantly ignores the problematic nature of patriarchy and makes light of a serious issue.
#BringBackOurHoodies is equally problematic as it also trivialises the situation of the 200 kidnapped girls in Nigeria that triggered the #BringBackOurGirls trend on Twitter.

Even though there has been progress with regards to gender equality, there is still a very long way to go.
