Bridal gowns: buying vs. renting

accreditation
In a previous article, we've had quite the debate surrounding whether hiring a dress is a better option than purchasing one.

While it can't be denied that buying a bridal gown would mean that you'd have the dress forever and would make the memory more tangible than simply looking at photos, surely opting to rent would be cheaper?

Our readers give us some additional opinions on this topic:

Shirley: I got married last year, I bought my dress and had it altered. I would have much preferred the rental option. There is no way you wear it again, also, you have all the lovely pictures afterwards so there's no need to hang onto it.

Whatever you do, do NOT spend your life paying off your wedding! That is the worst burden on a marriage that there is!

Motshidisi: I think renting makes more sense to me, why pay a fortune for a dress I'm only wearing once.

Kenalemang: The prices of buying are cheaper than hiring. I imported my wedding dress from China. It was R1500 and had to pay R400 for speedy delivery and courier (less than R2000).

It was of high quality and exactly the same on the picture. No issues at all. The same dress when I asked in SA to be designed was quoted as being R10 000. Hiring price was R4000.

Bridal Lane - wedding dresses: Many of our brides considered renting their dresses because they assumed that they would save money. But, after seeing that you really can buy a brand new dress for the price that many bridal shops hire their dresses for, they decided to get a new dress.

Tanya:  If I could go back in time I would have rented mine, but I could not find the dress I wanted to rent so I had a dress made and two days before the wedding I realised I wasn't "feeling the dress" and ended up going to Bride & Co to buy another gown. Spent +- R13K on 2 dresses that are now laying in a drawer under my bed.

Deryn: I hired mine, not planning to use it again.

Michèlle: Had both mine made.

Bongi: Rent, I see no reason to buy when I know I will use it only once.

Which option would you prefer? Buying, renting or having yours made? Share your thoughts below.
