Speculation over whether Bernie Ecclestone was afraid of being arrested at the
German GP was heightened after the
F1 supremo failed to show up on Sunday.
Even though Ecclestone’s absence at a European race is rare, it is not unheard of. It is however peculiar this time round as he promised beforehand that he would be at the event.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?In the days leading up to the German GP, local newspapers reported that Munich
prosecutors were readying their investigation of the 81-year old. The allegation comes after Gerhard Gribkowsky was
convicted of accepting bribes from the Briton.
"With Mercedes-Benz stalling on a new Concorde Agreement, and sponsors watching on anxiously, no one knows quite what will happen next," Tom Cary wrote in the Telegraph.
Gribkowsky’s lawyer told Deutschlandfunk radio he doubts the police will arrest Ecclestone.
“If he is arrested now," he said, "jailed for a long time and acquitted at the end, the state would be subject to extremely high damages."
Bild am Sonntag newspaper, however, claims Ecclestone's office has cancelled several meetings that were meant to take place at
Hockenheim this weekend.
