Montezemolo's new role in Olympics?

ROME, Italy - Former Ferrari president Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo is gaining support to lead Rome's bid for the 2024 Olympics.

Long-time IOC member Mario Pescante told The Associated Press: "I have to say he's perfect because of his experience in both international sports and business."

Italian Olympics committee president Giovanni Malago is expected to announce Montezemolo's appointment early in February.

CONNECTED MAN

Montezemolo stepped down from Ferrari in October after 23 years as president of the Italian car manufacturer during which time the automaker's Formula 1 team enjoyed some of its most successful seasons.

Except for recently...

Montezemolo also headed the organising committee for the 1990 soccer World Cup in Italy. He was named Alitalia's chairman in November 2014.

Pescante says Montezemolo "has connections all over the place".
