Toyota reveals 86 rally cars for '15 season

LONDON, England – Toyota’s 86 CS-R3 race car has moved closer to its rally competition debut later in 2015 with Toyota Motorsport confirming final specifications.

The CS-R3 was launched as a prototype in August 2014. Since then it’s undergone an extensive test programme to fine-tune design and specifications of the kit that will be delivered to private competitors and teams.

“The development work,” Toyota says, “has improved performance on gravel and tarmac, along with reliability and durability, to deliver a car that can be used for low-cost competition for a full season and beyond.”

FIRST DELIVERIES IN MAY

The CS-R3, the automaker says, “has proved immensely popular with its rear-wheel drive power train: a 1998cc, 176kW boxer engine and six-speed sequential transmission, producing a great driving experience”.

The first cars will be delivered to customers in May 2015, later than forecast to allow time for improvements, identified during testing, to be fully implemented. So, in Europe, Toyota Motorsport has extended its introductory discount, offering the CS-R3 kit, tarmac or gravel specification, at the equivalent of R1-million for orders placed before April 24 2015 - a R62 000 discount.

The kit includes a GT86 shell, power train and all the mechanical components required to build the car. The full specification and kit contents can be found at toyota-motorsport.com.

The car will be homologated to International Automobile Federation R3 regulations at the beginning of July 2015 after which all CS-R3 cars will be eligible for National and International rallying, up to and including the World Rally championship.

The 86 CS-R3 is expected to make its competition debut at the Rally Niedersachsen in Germany on July 4 with as many as 10 cars to race. This will be the first round of the new HJS Toyota Motorsport CS-R3 Trophy.

The series will be contested over seven rounds, with more than R64 000 in prize money at each event. The trophy will run for at least the next three seasons.
