Ford's new Figo sedan headed for SA

PRETORIA - Five years - that's how long it's been since the Ford Figo was first launched in South Africa in 2010.

In May, the automaker has revealed the second-generation of its popular Figo, set to arrive in South Africa towards the end of 2015.

For the first time, the Figo will be available in two body styles: the familiar hatchback and, for the first time, a sedan variant.

Prices and details will be announced closer to the launch though Ford SA confirms the range will expand with the addition of more derivatives and specifications in the future.

Tracey Delate, General Marketing Manager for Ford said: "The Ford Figo has been a remarkable success story in South Africa since it was launched in 2010."

"From the outset the Figo’s strong price point, smart features and the option of fuel-efficient petrol and diesel engines made it one of the top contenders in the Sub-B segment. In 2014 the Figo held an average of 15% share of this segment."

The Figo did have slight hiccup, when Ford's Indian subsidiary recalled nearly 140 000 of its most popular vehicles to rectify manufacturing defects that could cause a fire.

In August 2012 the automaker said an additional 10 000 vehicles exported to South Africa would also be recalled.

NEW AUTO FOR SA

Buyers of the new will have a choice of transmissions including a new auto. As before, petrol and diesel derivatives will be available.

The Figo retains its trapezoidal grille albeit more pronounced and sports a longer bonnet with elongated headlights.

Ford says the interior is completely redesigned with a focus on comfort and space. Inside, it has a new device-docking station incorporating Bluetooth connectivity, with voice activation, programmable MyKey function, as well as climate control.

In terms of safety, the new Figo is equipped with dual front and side air bags, anti-lock braking system and electronic stability control, with hill assist for top derivatives.
