BEIJING, China - The Mini Paceman - it claims to be the world's first 'sports activity coupe' in the premium compact segment - has been reworked "to have even more appeal to design-conscious buyers".

That's the Minimen's quote; the next one says their cars "have always offered athletic design and a sporty driving experience... now we've unveiled a new version at the Auto China Beijing show".

The new Paceman, the Minimen add, has fresh design details and a sportier interior and an optimised balance between driving performance and fuel consumption.

MORE POWER

"The car is more powerful yet more efficient, its engine developing 140kW, yet all variants of the new Paceman meet EU6 exhaust emissions standards," the Minimen add. "The John Cooper Works Paceman joins the refreshed line-up with an output of 162kW and all-wheel drive system."

The Paceman was launched in South Africa in May 2013 so this is an early facelift for 2014.

Mini South Africa says the cars will arrive towards the end of September 2014 in Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper D, Cooper SD and JCW derivatives but adds tha the current line-up will remain in the form of the Cooper, Cooper S and JCW units.

Extra power, Mini says, consolidates the Paceman's lead in the segment in terms of driving fun. Its four-cylinder engine with twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection and variable valve control has grown with five kW to 142kW.

The Paceman is the second model in the range to offer Mini’s All4 all-wheel drivewhich distributes drive power at continuously variable levels between the front and rear axle by means of an electromagnetic centre differential and is available for all model variants.

The units can be combined with a six-speed automatic transmission instead of the standard six-speed manual. The auto offers the possibility of manual gear selection with Steptronic – including shift paddles.

THE LINE-UP

Cooper: 90kW, 100km/h in 10.4sec, combined fuel consumption 5.9 litres/100km, 137g/km CO2 emissions.

Cooper S: 142kW, 100km/h in 7.5sec, six litres/100km, CO2 emission rating of 139g/km.

Range-topper John Cooper Works:163kW, 100km/h in 6.9sec, 7.1 litres/100km and 165g/km CO2 emissions.

On certain models the radiator grille has a specific contour and grid structure. The new John Cooper Works Paceman can be identified by a red radiator grille rib, with the JCW logo on the honeycomb. The Cooper S Paceman has a red curved ‘S’ on the grille.

The flowing roof line, falling off to the rear, and tapering side window graphic create a stretched, wedge-like silhouette.

The new exterior trim is in Piano Black; it surrounds the front and rear lights, the diagonal links between the A pillars and front wheel arches and on the (optional) roof rails. There’s a no-cost Chrome Line exterior available.

NEW COLOURS

New body colours include green or grey. Black or white contrasting roofs are available as a no-cost option, while a contrasting red roof is available exclusively for the John Cooper Works Paceman. Sport and bonnet stripes are also available in various colours.

The Paceman is designed as a 2+2, with sports seats for driver and front passenger and two individual rear seats. Speed and display dials are now anthracite in the style of the JCW Paceman across all models, along with chrome touches around the ventilation controls.

Safety features include daytime driving lights, tyre pressure control monitors and dynamic stability control.

Optional goodies include bi-xenon headlights with adaptive turning, auto aircon, power glass sunroof, a removable tow hitch, satnav, multifunction steering-wheel with cruise control, Harman Kardon audio system and model-specific JCW accessories.

Integration of third party apps into the car is available with Mini Connected, with current functions including web radio, Facebook, Twitter, RSS news feed and various entertainment programmes and applications.
