Concussed Rossi skips out of hospital

ARAGON, Spain - Valentino Rossi has checked himself out of hospital, in defiance of a hospital doctor's advice, to continue his recovery from concussion in his own motor home.

The 35-year-old Yamaha rider, nine-times MotoGP category in the various categories, was taken to hospital after crashing out of the 2014 Aragon MotoGP early in the race, which was won by Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo.

Rossi tweeted a picture of himself saying he was fine apart from the "head ache".

UNDER OBSERVATION

MotoGP medical director Michele Zasa said in a statement issued by his Yamaha team: "Valentino is progressing very well. In Alcaniz the CT scan was negative and although the local doctor wanted to keep him at the hospital overnight Valentino discharged himself,"

"Now he's in his motor home relaxing, and in any case the Clinica Mobile is keeping him under observation for the whole night.

"From a neurological point of view he has fully recovered and at the moment he's fine so we'll keep on taking care of him overnight and hope that by tomorrow morning (Monday Sept 29) everything will be OK"

With four races remaining, Rossi is battling Honda's Dani Pedrosa for second in the MotoGp championship which is being led, by a huge margin, by Honda's Marc Marquez, who also crashed on Sunday but recovered with a fresh bike and tyres to finish 13th - followed by team mate Dani  Pedrosa, who also fell

The next race in the championship will be in Japan.

Rossi had started the race full of confidence after winning last time out in San Marino but that bubble burst when he ran wide during the rain-hit Motorland race and was thrown from his bike. The bike narrowly missed the prone 35-year-old as it came to ground

'RECOVERED VERY WELL'

Zaza said on Sunday after the crash: "Valentino suffered a concussion with a suspected loss of consciousness. From a neurological point of view, he has recovered very well. He was taken to hospital in Alcaniz to make a further check, in particular a CT scan of the skull that has ruled out any bleeding in the brain.

"As a precaution he will be observed in the coming hours but there are no special reasons for concern."

The race was won by Rossi's Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo, cutting Rossi's lead over Lorenzo in third place in the championship standings to only 12 points with four races of the season remaining.

Dani Pedrosa's 14th placed finish moved the Spaniard just three points ahead of Rossi in second place in the overall standings but Spaniard Marc Marquez is well set for back-to-back championship titles as he extended his lead over Honda team mate Pedrosa to 75 points.

Both Honda riders crashed in the rain - after gambling that they could stay aboard to the end - picked up their bikes and rode on, eventually changing to fresh machines with wet-weather tyres.

They had been leading the GP.
