VIENNA, Austria - Swiss watchmaking giant Swatch plans to become one of the world's leading producers of advanced batteries and to develop a power cell for vehicles in three to four years.

Chief executive Nick Hayek said Swatch subsidiary Belenos Clean Power had developed a battery whose storage capacity was 50 to 100% higher than other products on the market, he told the Swiss L'Hebdo magazine, which received wide publicity in Switzerland.

The battery will consist of small cells that can be arranged in various shapes.
