DETROIT, Michigan - Toyota is recalling nearly 423 000 Lexus luxury brand cars in the US to fix fuel leaks that, itt's claimed, can ignite.

The recalls affect the 2006-11 GS, 2007-10 LS and 2006-11 IS models. Of the total,2972 vehicles in South Africa have been affected.

Toyota says the cars' fuel lines have nickel phosphate plating to protect against corrosion. Some lines could have been built with particles coming in contact with a gasket. That can cause the sealing property to deteriorate and cause fuel leaks.

FUEL ODOURS

Toyota says it's not aware of any fires or injuries caused by the problem. The company found it after getting complaints of fuel odours.

Dealers will repair the gasket seating surface at no cost to owners.

Some of the cars were recalled in 2009 to fix leaks in aluminum fuel pipes.

Wheels24 reported on October 15 that 1.75-million Toyota/Lexus products were being recalled globally for "brake and other problems" that posed a fire risk. There was also a Lexus recall in July 2010 of pre-2010 LS460 models for a "special service campaign" to replace engine valve springs.
