Marquez, Lorenzo battle to end in UK

ALAN BALDWIN

SILVERSTONE, England - 2013 MotoGP champion Marc Marquez powered to his 11th victory in 12 races in a thrilling British MotoGP battle here with fellow-Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo on Sunday.

Marquez, who had put his works Honda on pole for the 10th time in 2014, lost out to Lorenzo at the start but seized back the lead from Yamaha's double champion with seven laps to go after following what seems to be his regular 'why stress in the lead, leave it 'til later' game plan.

Lorenzo was not about to give up, going back in front two laps later when Marquez ran wide at Stowe.

BODY-BASHING

That was not the end of it, with Marquez then barging through in a bodywork-banging move with the machines almost locked together and the pair crossing the line only 0.732sec apart.

Italian Valentino Rosso, making a record 246th start in the top category, finished third for Yamaha.

Marquez, who has been beaten only once in 2014, now has an 89-point lead over Pedrosa who won the previous round in the Czech Republic.

Marquez has 288 points, Pedrosa 199 and Rossi 189.

'BATTLE WAS NICE'

Marquez, who was beaten by Lorenzo in 2013's British GP, told BT Sport TV: "Jorge was much stronger than I expected. When I passed him the first time I expected to open a small gap but I did a small mistake and he came back.

"The battle was nice!"

Honda has won every race so far in 2014 but Lorenzo took Yamaha closer than ever to the top step of the podium and felt he had done all he could.

"Marc was the favourite but racing is racing and sometimes you get a surprise," the Spaniard, who led into the first corner, said. "I rode better than ever but it was not enough because at the moment the Honda is very good, even if our bikes have improved.

"The touch cost me half a second but, anyway, I was so tired by pushing at the limit and the rear tyre was destroyed."
