PARIS, France - French police are searching for the driver of a car that smashed through a security barrier in central Paris near the finish line of cycling's 2015 Tour de France .
Police opened fire on the car but it was driven away after the incident at the Place de la Concorde at the foot of the famous Champs Elysees.
The car was later found abandoned nearby.
NO INJURIES
A police source said witnesses saw two men and two women leave the bullet-pocked car.
The world's greatest cycling race was to finish later on Sunday at the Arc de Triomphe, at the opposite end of the Champs Elysees, after the cyclists performed several laps up and down the famous avenue but interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told AFP:
"There is no clear link for the time being between this incident and the Tour de France finish."
Nobody was believed to have been hit when the police shot at the car; police stressed that no shots were fired from the car.
Security in the French capital has been heightened for months following jihadist attacks which claimed 17 lives that began with the massacre of staff at the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
British cyclist Chris Froome was set to win the tour, and thus secure his second victory, barring an unforeseen disaster.
