INGOLSTADT, Germany - Audi has unveiled its new DTM championship car at the 2014 Geneva auto show with an almost totally new aero package.

Audi Sport defined the task that confronted it from 2013: How do you make a DTM championship-winning car even better?

"Since the strict regulations in the Touring Car series," Audi says, "allow little room for manoeuvre. Engineers concentrated extensively on detail and the result has been unveiled at the Geneva show."

'MAIN PRIORITY'

At first glance, the automaker says, the car looks significantly more assertive; thank the nearly total re-development of its aerodynamics.

Stefan Aicher, head of vehicle design at Audi Sport, explained: “In addition to the suspension, our main priority was to improve the aero. The RS 5 now has the honeycomb grill from the production car and new air ducts to engine and brakes.

"As a result, the race car now shares an almost identical look to the sporting RS production models."

'RULES ARE STRICT'

Innovations along the flanks: to make the airflow even more efficient the exterior mirrors were moulded into the aerodynamic concept. The aerodynamics along the side between the front and rear wheels also reveal a new concept... the inner rear wheel arches are, in contrast to 2013, closed and the rear part is now flat.

Aicher again: “The DTM rules are strict, which is why minute detail work is required within tight limitations.”

Invisible from the outside, but crucial for track, was work invested under the carbon fibre skin. “For example, we made suspension modifications to the front and rear axles, from which we expect improvements,” says Aicher.

Sorry, he would say no more...
