One of my favourite aunties in the bundus of KwaZulu Natal is pretty open-minded about most things ... except for horoscopes.
“It’s satanism!”she yells.
The continuum of opinion regarding astrology is often either, or: believers vs non-believers (similar to Justin Beliebers vs non-Beliebers). We briefly investigate the two teams.
The Believers
Those who engage with horoscopes as a profession form part of the esoteric community. The Merriam-webster dictionary defines esotericism as, “requiring or exhibiting knowledge that is restricted to a small group.”
Schools of thought that fall under esotericism include: alchemy, astrology, magic, crystal healing and spiritualism.
Criticism
Mandy studied crystal healing at a college in Observatory Cape Town and is now a certified healer. She has also experienced her fair share of criticism.
Crystal healing is the use of crystals as a form of alternative medicine to heal human energy.
“Some of my friends even called me ‘dark’and ‘playing with fire’. People don’t know or understand and therefore draw their own conclusions about what they are not sure about in the first place,” she said.
As a recent UCT humanities graduate, she forms part of a small group of self-employed graduates.
She has a growing clientele and is using her crystal-healing powers as her way of making ca$hmoney and growing her own empire!
The Non-Believers
The topic of astrology in my school was the same as evolution: BANNED!
I was in a girls-only school and trying to find out whether the boys high boy across the road would ask you out on a date through a horoscope reading was not allowed. It was seen as ‘evil’ and my school was not a religiously affiliated school.
My auntie also stopped anyone of her girls from believing in that “disguised form of evil”.
The only positive feedback I ever received from her regarding my horoscope was that I was a Virgo and that I should never have sex then...EVER!
