Adults Only Short-Story Anthology (published by Mercury, an imprint of Burnet Media)

If your experience with the erotic fiction genre has only ever gone as far as reading 50 Shades of Grey, or a Mills and Boons book while on holiday, then you might want to give this book a try for a taste of something different.

Adults Only is an anthology of erotic fiction short stories edited by Joanne Hichens, who is also the curator of the Short Sharp Stories Award. The annual publication is based off entries received from entrants of the Short Sharp Stories Award which was created for the yearly National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. “It is the aim of this award to encourage, support, and showcase established and emerging South African writing talent,” says the Short Sharp Stories website. Oh, and if you’re a budding writer, entries for this year’s competition is now open.

When I first received my copy, I thought it would be your average so-called erotic fiction novel that tries to sell itself with sex.

Boy, was I wrong.

The range of stories in this book will make you feel a variety of emotions. It will make you laugh so hard you’ll nearly wet yourself. It will make you think about that ex-boyfriend you had at university, or that girl you kissed, but never got to have anything more with. It will also make you feel a little naughty, especially if read in public.

The best part of the book for me? While it tells stories filled with lust, fantasy and suspense, it also has stories of friendship, love, and heartbreak. It drives home that sex is not to be shied away from, or viewed as taboo. Sex is lovely, extraordinary even, and can make you feel like you’re on top of the world, but it is also completely ordinary.

Adults Only will be a delight to those already versed in the erotic fiction genre, and a great read for those who haven’t yet had the joy of snickering at the sentence “his throbbing member...”.

I definitely recommend that you pick up a copy. Not only will it enrich your bookshelf with its diverse range of storytellers, but it’s also always great to support local authors. Plus, the cover is really sexy, don’t you think?
