Angelina’s wedding dress: we’re whelmed

One of the biggest yet least shocking news stories of last week was that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finally got married. (The most shocking story of course being that Hello Kitty is not a cat.)

Of course, all Julie and I were interested in was the dress. Over the years Angie has had more hits than misses on the red carpet so naturally we expected something spectacular.

Sure she mainly sticks to elegant pieces, but they normally wow us, even the dress that birthed the leg meme.

But when a first glimpse of the dress was revealed on the cover of People, I was a bit underwhelmed. My first thoughts were: This dress is…okay. It’s not what I expected, but it’s okay.

What I do appreciate is that the kids had made their marks on the dress. Literally. Drawings by the Jolie-Pitt kids were sewn into the back of the dress. It’s a great way to involve the brood, who are very much in the forefront of their lives. In this sense, the plainness of the dress makes sense.

Though the silhouette screams conventional (possibly ’90s) wedding dress, the back is all about Angie as a hands-on mom.

Even Brad had an element from one of the kids in his suit. According to People, “Pitt wore a suit from his closet – with a tie borrowed from one of his sons because Pitt forgot to pack his.” Isn’t that lovely?

So it seems the wedding was a family affair more than it was about the bride. Because at the end of the day, being a mom and dad who raises happy kids is their main role, isn’t it?

Rating: Relaxing on the sofa with your honey while the kids climb all over you and then make wall art with Crayola.

Julie says:
To be honest, I had no idea what to expect when I heard Angie got married.

The possibility of her walking down the aisle in a white slip dress with a flower ring in her hair was as likely as any other style.

That’s what makes her such an anticipated arrival on red carpets – she’s both classic and daring.

This dress is… meh.

Let’s talk about the pose on the cover of People. She looks so unsure. Right, everyone gets cold feet, but she and Brad have been going steady for yonks, they’ve got their own sports team full of kids and it’s not like this is a surprise wedding.

Maybe that’s just her – a commitment phobe. But it doesn’t make for an inspiring cover.

The dress’s shape is a little conventional for her, and there are many silhouettes that would have looked better.

The bodice also does her amazing bust no favours. The fabric is gorgeous, if a little dated. The veil is sweet and I don’t really mind the drawings from the kids on the back of her dress.

It’s the most appropriate element of her entire look – Brangelina have always been a family, not a couple.

Look, I’m over the moon this wedding finally happened and it’s not like my eyes are bleeding or anything. Angie would never do that to us. But overall the dress is just fine. I was kind of hoping for her Mr and Mrs Smith black column dress – in white.

Rating: This dress is just sitting on the fence – not appropriate when marrying the world’s most beautiful man. Unless you’re the world’s most beautiful woman.

Overall rating: 5/10
