Lobola or bride price is an important aspect of African culture. It’s one of the few customary practices that have survived modernisation. Actually, not only has lobola survived it has also been integrated into modern society. But, how?
Through the app world of course.
Anakle, a Nigerian based design and coding company has developed a new app called Bride Price that will calculate how much your fiancé should pay to have you as his wife. It also gives men the option of checking how much their friends or enemies should pay for their new bride.
The categories range from weight, height and education. And then there are some really ridiculous ones like, leg shape(one of the options is Sexy Bow legs [Beyonce]), teeth, accent and cooking skills.
Most of the categories are very superficial, completely ignoring personality traits and the woman’s ability to be a good wife. For instance if you’re short, R289 (N4500) is automatically deducted from your price and if you’re tall you gain R1285 (N20000).
I tried out the app to get an idea of how much my future husband would pay for him if he ever consulted it. According to Bride Price, I’m worth NGN 396,500.00 which equates to R25 000.
Traditionally, lobola negotiations are not as superficial. We can only hope that men will consult their elders and not the app world when deciding on ilobola.
