Do you have a work spouse?

accreditation
I recently had to say goodbye to my work wife (That one colleague you make coffee with every morning, ask to take your calls and bitch about your boss with), Jana. So I thought I’d talk about the relationships we have with the people we see 8 hours a day.

When I first met Jana, I never thought we’d be friends. Don’t get me wrong, I thought she was nice and all, but we were just so different. I’m loud, talkative and unorganised (you should my desk. Sheesh!), while Jana likes quiet, gets annoyed by my talking and is much more neat and tidy.

Eventually, after many months of talking too loudly, being told to be more quiet and making too many crude jokes, I think Jana finally accepted that I wasn’t going to stop being loud. And I realised that sometimes I have to shut the hell up because not everyone wants to hear my lame jokes all the time.

In these last few months before Jana left the team (she’s off to London BTW. How awesome is that?), I realised that somehow she had become my friend, and a very good one at that. Although we could bicker like a couple who went through a bad divorce (so I started calling her my work ex-wife. Get it?), I was always able to turn to her when I was having a bad day or make inappropriate fart jokes which would have us laughing for hours and the rest of the office looking at us like we were insane.

Now my dear friend is off to bigger and better things. And while I couldn’t be happier for her, I do miss her.

But, luckily, I have the rest of my work family to keep me company. I got Lili, Tammy and our lovely intern Laura in the divorce, so I’m quite happy. A group of more intelligent, funny and genuinely amazing women you would have to search long and hard to find. Plus, they still laugh at my terrible jokes.

Now, I want to hear about your work family. Do you have a work wife/husband? Send us a picture of the two of you, along with both your names and a few sentences about why you think they’re great, and both of you could win an awesome Women24 t-shirt.
