Meet 5FM’s Fikile 'Fix' Moeti

Fix bought her first vinyl at the age of 15 and fell in love with the DJ world, immediately signing up with ‘Soul Candi’s’ DJ school. Having lived in the UK at an early age, and later living in the US in her early 20s, Fix’s musical influences range from New York’s Indie-Electro House, to the UK’s Grime House and electro pop.

Having started her career in the entertainment and media industry at the age of 19, Fix has always believed that business, the arts, and social development are not mutually exclusive.

In order to play her part in making this belief a reality, after 6 years of working in the entertainment industry, Fix decided to go back to school – studying at both Columbia College Chicago and New York University (studying Small Business / Entrepreneurship).

Constantly striving to enhance herself as a Social Entrepreneur, upon arrival back home, Fix continued her studies enrolling by enrolling at the ‘Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), University of Pretoria.’

The entrepreneurial 27-year-old beauty has graced our screens since 2006 when she won a nationwide competition to become MTV base’s newest presenter (and we also love her cool sense of style).

We recently chatted with her about her job and career trajectory:

1. How did you end up working in your current position?

I won an MTV VJ competition in 2006 becoming the first female VJ on ‘MTV networks Africa’.  I was a student at Cape Town University at the time, studying Film & Media.

2. What is your day to day like?

Now I am in radio, on 5FM between 1pm - 4pm with Rob Forbes and for the Saturday Night Fix (dance show) between 10pm and 1am. The other hours are filled with events, shoots, gigs and exercise.

3. What are your biggest work challenges?

Although I am a freelancer that's on air for 3hrs a day, finding time to take a break is almost impossible. My listeners hate it when I am on holiday because  they are not getting their daily fix!

To be honest, not many DJs take holidays and I think it's so important to take a break even if you stay home. I'm still trying to get this right!

4. What is the best part about your job?

My platform on radio allows me to push business ventures that I am passionate about, for example Fix Scholarship, my social enterprise that I've been running for two years.

In essence it is a competitive scholarship for Social Entrepreneurs who pursue entrepreneurial solutions for urgent social development challenges. We have an awesome fundraiser coming up called 'Party with a Purpose' check out www.fixscholarship.org for more info.
