How much is too much when declaring your love online?

accreditation
In this digital and very self-aware age, people have taken to social media to declare their love.

This could lead to a sickening display of soppy statuses complete with cutesy picture and many weird emoticons as described in the article Stop it, you’re making my eyes bleed.

We asked our readers what they think about the article and whether they agree or not. This was their response:

Loved your newsletter this week! You put into well written words what I have been feeling for a while now! Why people feel the need to announce their love for their partner in a public forum when they can be downright mean to said partner in person (all within the same day) is beyond me.

About the same as my Afrikaans friend calling her husband ‘Engel…’ with teeth clenched and eyes narrowed when she is mad at him. It just ain’t real! It’s all about the dressing and show, especially on FB, where posed and edited studio photo shoots and saccharine sweet corny quotes now rule. It feels like FB has become the ultimate ‘keeping up with the Jones’s’ reality show, with people bragging about how wonderful their homes/ partners/families are…would be great, except for the irony of them spending 3+ hours a day looking at FB, instead of spending it at home/with partner/family!

PS, Am really hoping for a ‘Dislike’ icon on FB soon, but can just imagine the upset this would cause!

I believe - trust your gut - if you read a post that irritates you - then you totally right they are just trying to brag, or fill some void - the intent behind a message I believe says more than the words, you just know its fake charade.

Hence I also believe some people are also sincere in their love and to honour them via a "third person" just confirms the honour in private.  And it does feel great, its a surprise, because you get it at home you don't expect double honour. Let a love one, friend, that you know cherishes you; honour you public (FB) and I'm sure you will feel special.

Bottom line, I believe the intent speaks louder than the words and readers just know it.

Yes, it bothers me plenty.  I haven’t quite made up my mind yet whether it is bragging about your fabulous life, delusion (self or otherwise…), or just another version of the constant selfie pics, ie, if the world doesn’t share in it on social media it doesn’t matter / you don’t exist… ! Probably a mix of all of these? Either way, boring and extremely annoying. A bit like public displays of too much affection! A chaste kiss, as you mentioned, is lovely, while the ‘get a room’ variety is just yuck!

Love and privacy!
