A perfectly polished nail is actually quite difficult to obtain. Hang nails and cracked cuticles can spoil a perfect manicure, which is why we spoke to Nastassja Howard from Sorbet salons about effective ways to combat nail problems:
• File your nails properly
This may seem simple but “sawing" your nail with a nail file can lead to splitting and chipping. Be sure to file your nails in one direction from side to center.
• A filing tip for your toes
Always file your toenails into a square shape - this prevents ingrown toenails.
• Buff your nails regularly before applying polish
Smoothing out the nail plate will help to ensure a longer lasting nail colour.
• Always apply a base coat before applying a dark polish
This prevents your nail from turning yellow.
• Wash and exfoliate your hands before applying polish
This removes any excess oil from the nail that can cause the polish to chip and peel.
• Wear gloves while washing up
Detergents and soap can dry out the skin and nails as it can cause weakening and breakage.
• Avoid using your nails as tools
Our nails can become useful for trying to get into tiny gaps, but this cause breakage at the nail tips. So avoid doing this at all costs.
• Do not tear a hang nail
Tearing can cause deep damage and leaves the skin open to infection. Instead, nip the excess skin.
For an all-in-one treatment, Nastassja moves that we as women regularly treat ourselves to manicures, keeping our hands groomed, moisturised and happy.
