Is your smartphone giving you wrinkles?

accreditation

Love to browse Instagram, Twitter and Facebook on your phone? Careful, your smartphone may just be speeding up your ageing process.

According to The Telegraph more and more young people between the ages of 18 and 39 are now being affected by modern technology in a very specific way.

Let’s face it, this age group is more likely to have two or more tech device on (and in) hand at all times and are estimated to look at their screens (be it a tablet, laptop or most likely a smartphone) up to 150 times a day.

No jokes. I actually think I look at my phone screen much more to be frank.

Not only are these screens giving us back problems, affecting our relationships with friends and colleagues (c’mon, you know you use your phone as a tool of avoidance), but now, a condition dubbed “tech neck” is deteriorating people’s looks as well.

The Telegraph says that dermatologists believe a constant downward gaze  - tilting one’s head at a 45 degree angle throughout the day - contributes to the increased development of wrinkles and creases around the neck and chin area in young people. Drooping jaws are also apparently a symptom says The International Business Times.

Harpers Bazaar consulted with Dendy E. Engelman, MD, Director of Dermatologic Surgery and Laser Medicine at the Metropolitan Hospital. He said the dermis of the neck - the layer that contains collagen - shows signs of ageing much faster, than say, your face or your legs.

How to avoid getting tech neck

A best way to avoid "tech neck" is to bring your phone up to your eye level, rather than craning your neck to look down at your screen.

Always try to keep your neck in a neutral position at all times when dealing with technology in order to limit your range of motion.
