How to shop on sale

accreditation
Sales can be a nightmare for your wardrobe and your wallet, depending on how you spend.

How many times have you bought something on sale, only to have it hanging in your wardrobe, with the tag still on it?

I was recently enticed by a 50% off sale.  I found these fabulous leggings for R60 each.  R60! Wow, what a bargain.  It was tempting just to take two and head off.

Luckily, I tried them on and realized that they weren't a good fit and that I actually don't need them. That would have been R120 wasted on items I am unlikely to wear.

On the other hand, I found a beautiful, genuine leather skirt on a half price sale.

I had been dreaming of a leather mini skirt for some time and I have been keeping my eyes peeled for one that is just right.  That was a bargain as it’s formed part of my basic wardrobe.

We all have our individual shopping styles, which determines how we should best handle half price sales.

If you are the:

1. Investment buyer:  You are the "less is more" kind of girl.  You are happy to spend on good quality items that you will love for seasons to come.

How to shop on sale:
You need to be on the hunt for good basics at reduced prices.  If you are an unusual size, you may find this easier as it’s usually these sizes that are left over. You can even stock up on classic basics for next winter, like good quality leather boots, a fabulous coat etc.  You may have to spend some time looking, but the reward will be worth it.

2. Spontaneous buyer:  You either love shopping or hate it.  You either get caught up in the excitement of a new item or hate shopping so much that you just grab something without thinking about whether it is right for you.

How to shop on sale:
You need to be conscious of each item you purchase, whether on sale or not.  Ask yourself: "Do I have something in my wardrobe that I can wear this with?",  "can I wear it in many different ways, by dressing it up or down?", or "how much wear will I get from this item?".  Forget that it’s on sale and only buy it if it’s just right, otherwise it’s not a good deal.

3. Label queen: You love brands. Your dream is to have the budget to buy only designer items.

How to shop on sale:
Sales are great for this shopping style. Go to all the designer stores and big retailers that stock designer brands. You may just find that designer bag or pair of jeans on a half price sale.  But be weary of just buying something because it’s a branded item.  Make sure it fits well and works well with your existing wardrobe, then it’s a bargain.

4. Bargain hunter: Nothing excites you like finding a bargain! You are the first at the door when there is a sale and you seldom pay full price for something.

How to shop on sales:
Sales can be very dangerous for you as you think you are getting a bargain because it’s on sale.  Before going shopping, decide what you need and what you really want.  Only buy something on sale if it meets these criteria. You can spend a lot of money on "bargains", but still have very little to wear. Some things are worth spending a full price on.
